The Engagement
By Heather

January 19, 2005, was my 19th birthday. Steve is a pastor and was attending some ministers' meetings in Topeka at the time, but he called me that morning to wish me a happy birthday and to tell me he would be leaving the convention that day. Naturally, I assumed he meant he'd be driving home. . . .

I was to have a party at my friend Tybee's place that evening, and Dad was to meet us at their place on his way home from work. (By the way, Tybee will be my maid of honor in the wedding; her father, Steve Wall, is the officiating minister.) I spent the day decorating my cake and was putting the finishing touches on it when Mom got off the phone with Dad; he was delayed and would call us when he got there. (I assumed that he [Dad] was delayed at the office, but in reality he [Steve] was delayed at the airport! Dad was delayed because he had to pick him up!)

After we had all arrived, Dad immediately seemed quite anxious for me to start openning my gifts. There in the living room, among all my smaller presents, was a HUGE box all wrapped up in multi-colored paper! Being one to save the best for last, I started opening the smaller things first. After a couple gifts, everyone started joining in Dad's battlecry to open the big one. I finally gave in and started clipping the ribbons on the -- The -- box when Tybee's mom asked if I could guess what was in it. (Big mistake!!!) Not having the foggiest idea, I started shaking the box for all I was worth, as any birthday girl would, to see if it rattled!!! It didn't, but when the package started moving on its own, I knew something was up.

Before long, Steve was out of the box and into my arms. In my crazed fog I hardly even saw that he was holding something out for me to read; it was a large, red, velvet, heartshaped pillow that he had made himself. He'd gotten something embroidered on it:

"Heather, I Love You, Will you marry me? --Steve"

I don't think I have to tell you what my answer was; you probably heard it yourself! So just incase you've been wondering where that ear-splitting "YES!!!!!" came from on January 19, now you know! :-)
