How Heather Met Steve
Steve and I met in September of 1997 at the Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church in Alquerque, New Mexico, when I was on vacation visiting relatives. My uncle Bob ran the sound system there at the church, and being the curious eleven-year-old that I was, I decided to sit beside him one Sabbath just to see what he did behind that big control pannel. There was one thing that I didn't know, however: Uncle Bob had an assistant whose seat I had just taken! Pretty soon I found myself squished between my uncle and a tall, blond, fourteen-year-old stranger -- who is now the love of my life.
We both remember feeling uneasy about sitting next to each other, but our versions of the story differ as to who "broke the ice" first! In any event, for the next several Sabbaths I found myself squished between my uncle and a tall, blond, fourteen-year-old friend. I was drawn to Steve's character right from the start, and it didn't take long before I had an all-out crush. Steve was drawn to me too, although not on a romantic level, and before I left New Mexico he asked me to be his pen-pal.
The years past. Steve and I continued to write to each other. My admiration for him only grew with each letter he sent me. One question kept haunting me though: What if Steve never became attracted to me the way I was attracted to him? That question became less of a question in September of 2003 when his letters turned into phone calls. By January or February we were talking for hours on end every Sunday, and on April 11, 2004, Steve asked me if I would be his girlfriend.
