How Steve met Heather
1997 turned out to be a very significant year for me. In that year I started volunteering for a Christian Radio Station, which would eventually hire me. That same year my family became involved in starting a church plant in Edgewood, NM and I became involved in Children?s ministry and church leadership, which has proved invaluable in my ministry as a pastor. And that was the year I befriended a girl who would later become the love of my life.
The story is as follows. I was the assistant Audio engineer for the Heights Seventh-day Adventist church (Albuquerque, NM) and Bob was the head Audio Engineer, and my mentor. Everyone in the church knew that I always sat next to Bob by the PA system in church but one Sabbath I came into the church only to find that some girl had taken my seat. I was very perturbed and wasn?t about to let this intruder take my seat so I just sat down and she had to quickly scoot over so I wouldn?t land on top of her. So there were two kids, who didn?t want the other one to be there, sitting in a space just big enough for one. Our stories part ways as to who first broke the ice, I remember Heather talking first and she remembers me introducing myself. As it turned out Bob was her uncle and she was going to stay for a month and a half. Heather joined our Pathfinder club and sat next to Bob and me every Sabbath in church and we ended up becoming friends. When she went back home we continued our friendship by writing to each other.
Though she was always very appropriate in her conduct and never tried to push herself on me I knew right away that she had a major crush on me (or maybe more) but never let her know that I knew. Her feelings for me, and her inability to hide them, was a point of humor in my family. I had made myself a pledge that I wouldn?t even start into the boy/girl romantic scene until I was 20 because I didn?t want romance to distract me from other things that are important for a kid to do before he?s grown up.
When I was 20 and felt that it was definitely time to start looking for a wife. I came up with some character qualities I was looking for. And realized that I already knew just the Godly person I was looking for, it was Heather. I wondered if Heather still liked me because we hadn?t written much in the past couple of years. I began writing her again and wanted to take our relationship deeper but was too shy. A friend finally convinced me to call her on the phone and our relationship grew from there (thanks Seth).
Our Engagement
There comes a time in the life of a man when he finds that he needs to ask the all important question, ?will you marry me?? for most this is a time of great nervousness but not for me. I already knew what her answer would be so I decided to make the event a memorable one.
It is best if I just let Heather tell you about it.
